Last Post - Feelings, Aspirations

I think this will be my last blog post this year.  School ends on Tuesday!  I will be going to Highlands Intermediate next year.    I am excited, and nervous.  I am not totally sure what I want to do when I am older.  Some of my ideas are to be a piano teacher, piano composer, or a doctor.

For the end-of-year assembly I get to read my speech I wrote for the end-of-year assembly.  Here is a copy of my speech.  In my speech I acknowledge and thank some of the teachers that have helped me, I give a piece of advice to the year 5's-next year's year 6's, and I talk about some of the experiences the year 6's have had this year.  Remember that I don't mention all of the teachers that have helped me through my years here at Frankley.
Thank you to all of the people that have commented and helped with my blogging. If you have quesetions or comments I would like you to comment in the comment bar below. If you haven't been recieving my replies to your comments, trying ticking a box that says 'Sent me follow up comments on this blog post'. Thank you for your support, Mercy

My IKAN Success

Today we did the IKAN test.  (The IKAN test is a maths test.  It goes quite quickly so you don't normally have tome to figure it out, you just have to know it.)
The boxes that are blue I got everything right in. I am happy with how I did on the IKAN today.

All About Me

As a class we made google drawings with pictures that showed a part of our personality or one of our hobbies. If you hover over the cirles it will say explain why I put that picture on my All About Me. Here is mine. If you have any comments/questions I would like a comment.

Super SLC

On Tuesday I had my Student Led Conference (S.L.C.).  My mom, dad, little sisters, and friends from Germany came.  I really enjoyed it, and felt like I got to share all the things I wanted to.  This is a picture of me explaining my oline tracking.

My Writing Goal

My writing goal for the past term has been to write different genres of writing.  On this google doc, I have told you what genre of writing it is, what the title of the writing is, and I put in a link to the piece of writing.

If you read any or all of the pieces of writing, I would appreciate a comment.

Questions

As a class we got a task and were told to write 5 questions that would help us find the information it asks for in the task.  This is the task:

Frankie the duck has turned up at Frankley School. He appeared a few weeks ago and is now here everyday. He has made our school his new home!

Frankie seems very tame and is getting friendlier each week he stays. We need to make sure that Frankie stays happy and healthy. He has special requirements to keep him in optimum health, prevent him from getting diseases and ensure he has the proper diet his particular species should have.

We also need to know that Frankie will not harm or bother staff or students. We must make sure that Frankie does not pose a health hazard to us, spread diseases and that our grounds stay clean from his waste.

Write 5 good questions that we need to ask to help us make sure of this.

These are my 5 questions:

What are the  special requirements that need to happen to keep Frankie, a duck that has made Frankley School his home, from getting diseases and in optimum health, and how can we help Frankie meet those special requirements?

How can we ensure that Frankie, a duck that has made Frankley School his home, has a proper diet for his/her particular species, and that he/her gets all he/her needs to live that diet?

How can we ensure that Frankie, a duck that has made Frankley School his home, will not harm or bother staff or pupils of Frankley School, and that Frankie is not a health hazard to us?

How can we ensure that Frankie, a duck that has made Frankey School his new home, will not spread diseases, and that our school grounds will stay clean from his waste?

How can we make sure that Frankie, a duck that has made Frankley School its new home, will stay happy and healthy?

The teachers rated the questions looking at the question waka. The are marked as effective questions if they are stages 3-7. When we write questions we try to get a range of questions between 3 and 7.

3= Asking 'yes', 'no', 'maybe' questions
4= Using the seven servants and key words.
5= Using the seven servants, key words and key phrases.
6= Using the seven servants and synonyms of key words.
7= Probing questions using two or more question words when interviewing a person.

Most of the time when you are writing you try not to only do one of the stages, especially 3. If you only yes/no questions it would be hard to get information.

Fact or Fiction?

On the first day back after the school holidays, Mrs. Parkes had us write a story about what we did in the holidays.  But there was a twist to it.  We could make our story completely true, partly true and partly made up, or totally fiction (made up).

After reading that do you think it is fact, fiction, or part of both?  Answer in the comments, and I can tell you if you’re right.

Trying at Cross Country

I felt like curling up into a ball like a snail into its shell and waiting, just waiting.  Trying to distract myself from the tight competition looming ahead, getting closer, and closer by the minute.  There’s no way around it.  I have to run my hardest and hope for the best.

We had school cross country today.  I ran in the 10 year old girls race.  The writing you just read I wrote before the race.  This writing I wrote after the race, explaining how I finished.

I turned around the bend and my ears were filled with sound,

“Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.”

I had a surge of energy, and I lengthened my strides, trying to run like a cheetah.  As I saw the place where I would rest, I sprinted, knowing that Lola and Sophie both wanted to get there before I did.   I crossed the line and I couldn't hold back a smile.

Changing decimals within 1000’s to a percentage.

Here is an explain everything about my IKAN goal:
Change a decimal within 1000’s to a percentage.
In this explain everything I am changing 1.399 into a percentage. I would appreciate a comment about this explain everything/post.

Traveling Rush

We were finally in the air.  We had been delayed in Oakland ,California for about 2 hours!
Being delayed that long would make a tight connection for our next flight.

We landed in Los Angeles, C.A. with about 40 minutes till we had to be checked in to our next flight.   We quickly exited the plane and made our way to the baggage claim.  We waited for our suitcases to come into view and pulled them off.  We started as quickly as we could to try to find our way to the international terminal.

Once we knew where to go to the international terminal we didn’t wait to start running to get there.  We were in terminal 1 and we had to pass terminal 2 and 3 to get there.  My mom was pushing one of the airport trolleys that had 3 suitcases stacked on it.  I was pulling a suitcase, as was my younger sister, Sage.

Sage and I were following our mom, trying not to fall behind her too far.

My youngest sister, Joyce, was trying to run beside my mom but eventually she slowed down and started to be left behind.  My mom picked Joyce up and held her on the cart.

When Sage got tired. I took the suitcase she was pulling and tried to keep both suitcases going straight.

When we had mode it to halfway past terminal 3 I started getting tired.  We kept going and we encouraged each other.  Working together we pulled through and made it to where we needed to check in.

According to my mom’s phone we had three minutes left.  We talked to one of the people behind the desk.  They said we were too late.  My Mom showed them her phone to show we had 3 minutes left.  They took our bags and checked us in!  We were relieved.  I felt that it was worth the run even though we were all tired and it felt really good to rest.

In the end we made our flight by working as a team and keeping on going even when we were tired.

Dividing Decimals

This is an explain everything about a strategy we are learning about in school that helps if you are trying to do division with decimals.  The problems I solved in the explain everything are 2.1 divided by 3 and 2.36 divided by 6.  I would appreciate a comment about this explain everything.

Tracking My Own Learning

Tracking is good to do because then we have a choice of what to do.  It would make school fun if we get to choose all the things we do.

I think I am getting enough of everything in except maybe writing and WIT.  I only got 3 sessions of writing and we’re meant to do 4.  I only got 3 sessions of WIT and we’re meant to get 4-5.

Reading-I got 6 sessions in and we’re meant to do 4.

WIT-I got 3 sessions in and we’re meant to do 4-5.

Writing-I got 3 sessions in and we’re meant to do 4.

Spelling-I got 2 and we’re meant to get 2-3.

Other-I got 4 sessions in but it doesn’t really matter how much we do of this.

Maths-I got 3 sessions in, and it doesn’t matter how many we do.

IKAN-I got 6 sessions in and we’re meant to do 3.

I got lots of extra on IKAN and Reading.  Next week I need to do extra Writing and WIT.

I got all my must dos done this week.

I really don’t want to go back to the way where the teacher chooses what everyone does at every time.  Then even if we really want to finish something if the teacher say we have to move on we have to move on.

If some people want to do the same thing at the same time then the teacher could have a group that always does the same thing at the same time. And the people that want to choose what to do and track their learning could do what they want to do (if the teacher trusts them).

I have enjoyed choosing what to do some of the time.  And I want to carry on doing it more.  It would make school more fun.

Piano Group Class

Piano Group Class

With blurry eyes I saw the door open and a dark figure was standing in the doorway.  As my eyes adjusted to the dark.  I saw my mom standing, beckoning for me to get up.  She asked if I was awake and I answered saying

“I'm awake.”

I glanced at my watch.  5:00 am.  I got out of my bed.  Still half asleep I walked out and got dressed.

I walked into the piano room and got out the books I was going to use.  I turned on the metronome to 120 and practised Hanon to warm my fingers up.

It was 5:15 am. so my mom pushed the ‘call’ button to call my teacher on face-time.(my mom is also my teacher.  I Learn a lot from my mom as well.)  It didn't work.  So my mom tried again.  It didn't work again.  Finally after several more tries it worked.  Yay!

I saw the rest of the girls my age waiting to play.  My teacher asked me if I wanted to be first, or if I wanted to wake up a bit more before I played.(since everyone else was in America it was about 12:15, noon, for them.)  I answered saying I wanted to play now.

I played.  I was nervous but I played even better than I practised.  I made only 3 mistakes!  That was a score of -3!

By the end of group class no one else had a higher score than -3!  That meant I was the winner!  I was very happy.

At the end of group class, everyone got a chocolate bar.(except me because I am in New Zealand and everyone else was in America)  My teacher said she would save my TWO chocolate bars.(I got two because I won)

It was a fun group class and I'm glad I went.

Super SLC's

A SLC is a student lead conference, it is a time where the students have a chance to show and explain their learning.  My dad came to my SLC because mt mom was out of town.  I showed my art, writing, reading, Te Ara Tika (or WIT), and my way of setting out my day (planning).  I enjoyed my SLC.  It can help me understand my learning better as well (not just the person listening learns things.)
This is a photo of me explaining my book to my dad and little sister (isn't she so cute!).

Year 6 Video

This is a video of me talking about my aspirations.
This link should take you to a post telling you about when this video was presented, and me being a Frankley Graduate.

Frankley Graduate

On Friday, There was a assembly to honor us year 6's .  At the assembly we displayed some videos of the year 6's talking about their aspirations, we displayed photos of the year 6's, some of the year 6's explained the graduate profile, and us Frankley Graduates were presented with our badges.

When I wear my badge I feel responsible because the little kids watch me with my badge and sometimes they copy what I do.

Wearing a badge means I am a role model.

This was a good idea because the little kids know that  it's our last year at Frankley  School when we are wearing our badge.  I makes me think "Is this something I want the younger children to copy me doing?

I don't want to loose my badge.

I am glad my mum came to the assembly.  I think we both have a better understanding of the graduate profile now.

I have a better understanding of the graduate profile now because at the assembly people spoke about the graduate profile in some detail.  The 3 main points of the graduate profile are:

  • Making a Positive Difference
  • Being a Creative Learner
  • And being a Effective Communicator
To see the graduate profile in more detail go to the room 11 blog.

My badge will help me focus more during my last year here at Frankley School because I know the younger kids will be watching to see what they might like to be like when they are a year 6.  I am a young leader.  And I want to be an inspiring young leader.

I am glad we had this assembly.  Thanks to everyone that helped it happen.

This a photo that was displayed during assembly.

Here is a link to a post where there is a video of me talking(the video was displayed during assembly.)

Sunset

Sunset

This is the setting sun
For today its job is done

The sky is a beautiful red
As I get ready for bed

When I drift off to sleep
The sun goes down deep

But I know that later
It will come back around the equator.
